The Fire and Ambulance Services Academy organised a dress rehearsal and an open day respectively on 9 and 10 April 2016, attracted 1 200 and 15 000 visitors. Among those, about 150 were CDF project participants. They had the opportunity to watch the fire appliance and ambulance parade and fire-fighting and rescue demonstrations. Recruitment information corner, display of training facilities and an exhibition on fire safety education were also set up at the venue to provide visitors with information on the day-to-day routine of firemen and ambulance personnel as well as good fire safety practices. Visitors could also take some fitness tests on the spot to see if they had the qualities required for joining the fire and ambulance services.

Participant of Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service's "Step Up 4 — Life Guiding" project (Kowloon City and Yau Tsim Mong) This was my first close contact with the Fire Services Department through which I had the chance to learn more about their services. The Fire and Ambulance Services Academy has built many simulated training facilities which can enhance firemen and ambulance personnel's response and co-ordination in handling major incidents, enabling them to perform efficiently in real rescue operations. I have some knowledge about fire-fighting and first aid, but the visit to the dormitories, the administration building and the simulated fire scene was certainly an eye-opener to me and my mentor. The fire-fighting and rescue demonstrations, which showed us ways to rescue people stranded in a fire and give them first-aid treatment, were the most impressive. |

Participant of Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service's "Step Up 5 — Life Guiding" project (Kowloon City and Yau Tsim Mong) I am interested to join the ambulance service. The visit has deepened my understanding of this profession including the academic and fitness requirements, helping me to realise that I should start gearing up for it. I hope I shall have more opportunities to also learn about other professions in the future. |
